Education for PWD's


Integrated Visually Impaired Education:

Like other welfare states in the world, the Bangladesh government is also implementing comprehensive and multi-faceted programs through the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Social Services for the welfare and development of the poor, neglected, backward, poor, orphans, disabled and backward people of the country with the aim of strengthening the social safety net. As a backward section, the present government is giving special importance to disabled people. A part of this disabled population is visually impaired.


Integrated Visually Impaired Education Program was started in 1974 for visually impaired students. Government Speech-Hearing Impaired School, Baburhat, Chandpur, Department of Social Services, Chandpur District, to enable visually impaired children to have access to education and to study with sighted students in local schools under special management and to adapt to their own environment and conditions instead of relatively expensive institutional programs. This center has been launched within it. Its number of seats is 10. Integrated Visually Impaired Education Program and residential institutions running educational programs from first class to SSC are being established in the society through feeding, education, training, treatment, recreation and rehabilitation of visually impaired students. All these institutions provide the following services:


  • Provision of formal education to visually impaired students integrated with general students;
  • Systematization of teaching through braille system;
  • provision of free Braille books and other supporting educational materials;
  • Providing hostel facilities including board and lodging to visually impaired students; And
  • Rehabilitation of visually impaired students.


In 1974, the Visually Impaired children were connected with different schools with the aim of providing educational opportunities to visually impaired children and instead of relatively expensive institutional programs, they could study with regular students in local schools under special management and adapt to their own environment and conditions. Integrated Visually Impaired Education Program was launched for children. In each program, visually impaired children are taught in Braille under the supervision of a specially trained 'resource teacher'. The number of seats in each center is 10.

Service Delivery Procedures (In Brief)


Interested parents have to submit the application to the Resource Teacher / Deputy Director in the prescribed form. The concerned resource teacher prepares the list of received application forms and selects the visually impaired students through the admission committee meeting. Then the admission is completed by notifying the applicant. Admitted children are educated in Braille mode with regular students in designated educational institutions and resource teachers supervise the teaching. All expenses related to accommodation, food and medical for the admitted visually impaired students are handled by the Department of Social Services.

Special Note: 01 complex building has been constructed in A. Rob Secondary School campus for visually impaired education program, Bhola. But still the Department of Social Services has not understood the building. That is why education programs for visually impaired boys cannot be started. The building built for visually challenged boys has been occupied by A. Rob Secondary School and is being run as their class room. The said building needs to be handed over to the Department of Social Services.
