Diseases severely disrupt people's normal lives and make them helpless. Illness is more painful for the suffering poor patients. The importance and effectiveness of hospital social work is immense in ensuring that sick people receive their basic right of medical care. Among the various public welfare activities carried out under the Department of Social Services, 'Hospital Social Service Activities' is an important day-to-day service activity, which is directly related to the service of the poor, destitute, helpless and downtrodden. Through hospital social service programs, the poor, indigent patients are provided with psychological, family, social, economic and illness-related support, increasing the mental strength of the patient, covering the medical expenses, providing various information to the doctor about the patient's disease and the cause of the disease, and providing support for his rehabilitation after the treatment. . Through this program, it is possible to make a patient strive for his physical, mental and all-round welfare. Social work can play a significant role in the medical field.
Among the various welfare activities carried out under the Department of Social Services, medical social service activities are very important. This program was first started in Bangladesh in 1958. This program is being conducted at the Hospital Social Services Office of the 250 bedded General Hospital of Bhola district through 'Rogi Kalyan Samiti' registered under the Voluntary Social Welfare Organizations (Registration and Regulation) Ordinance, 1961. As per the directives of the present government, the work of formation and registration of patient welfare associations has been completed in upazila health complex in 06 upazilas except Sadar upazila of Bhola district with the aim of expanding medical social service activities for the medical assistance of rural poor people, which is directly involved in the services of the oppressed.
Aims and Objectives of Hospital Social Service Activities :
Knowing the history of the disease by establishing a professional relationship with the patient (Rapport building) and making them able to receive treatment and cure the disease through counseling (Counseling) and sending (Motivation);
Facilitating the path to complete recovery by providing free assistance to the poor and unable to pay medical expenses in the areas of medicines, food, blood, medical aids, travel fare, transport of corpses and costs of cremation and diagnostic tests etc.;
Socially rehabilitate abandoned and helpless underprivileged children and destitute persons in hospital as per Children Act, 2013, Vagrants and Destitute Persons (Rehabilitation) Act, 2011 and other existing laws respectively;
Discharged from hospital, making the helpless working person self-reliant by engaging in income generating activities;
Ensuring the rights of the elderly, widows and widowed women and disabled patients by providing priority services and assistance under social security programmes;
To provide priority services to people with complex diseases including cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, congenital heart disease, paralyzed by stroke, thalassemia and help them get services under social security programs;
Creating public awareness on family planning, maternal and child health care and prevention of all forms of communicable and complex diseases;
As appropriate, contact with the patient's family and visit the patient's home to resolve family problems, strengthen family ties, assist in family and community reintegration;

Providing psychological services to help the patient adapt to the new environment;
Enhancing patient morale and courage in operations and terminal illnesses;
Providing immediate motivation and counseling services to boost the morale of abused women and children who come to the hospital's one-stop crisis center;
Encouraging and empowering parents through counseling and motivation to seek treatment for transgender children;
Assisting in mental development of homeless and homeless patients; And
Providing encouragement and counseling to parents as well as assisting in the mental development of mental and drug addict patients
Social Services:
Assistance with information on hospital admission and medical treatment;
Taking measures to get help for patients suffering from cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, congenital heart disease, paralyzed by stroke, thalassemia and other diseases through the medical assistance program under the Department of Social Services;
Assisting patients with complex diseases such as cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, tuberculosis, AIDS and other diseases in order to provide better medical care as per doctor's advice, if necessary, transfer to another hospital;
Taking necessary measures in case of unidentified patients in consultation with hospital authorities; the
Patient home visits, follow-up and communication with family members as needed;
Priority in medical care for children, disabled, transgender persons and elderly;
Treatment of homeless, addressless and abandoned children or persons including rehabilitation in various institutions of the Department of Social Services in applicable cases;
Providing regular indoor and outdoor patient counseling and stimulation services on family planning, maternal and child health care, cleanliness and prevention of contagious and infectious diseases;
To organize seminars, workshops etc. and to publish and disseminate promotional leaflets, brochures etc. with a view to creating public awareness about the dangers of contagious and infectious diseases; And
As the case may be, provision of entertainment for patients, eg: TV, daily newspaper, magazine corner etc., children's playground etc.
Financial Services:
Providing free medicines, tests, clothes, food, blood, transportation of bodies, cremation, travel fare, prostheses, medical aids and other medical assistance to indigent, distressed and poor patients receiving outpatient and inpatient care. As the case may be, arrangements are made in consultation with the hospital authorities for all examinations and free treatment of the patient.
Source of Income of Patient Welfare Society :
Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council and other government grants received;
General and Life Membership Subscriptions;
Cash received as zakat, donations, grants through charitable individuals and institutions;
Medical supplies received through charitable individuals and organizations;
Cash received through various income enhancing programs etc.
Beneficiary:
Poor, indigent and distressed patients receiving treatment in hospital inpatients and outpatients.
